Dennis D. Jacobs
Dennis D. Jacobs is an award-winning journalist and avid traveler. His byline has appeared in scores of publications, including the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Des Moines Register, and the Northwest Herald. He is the author of the book, "More or Less Loess."
Dennis began his writing career at the age of 16, when he became the first sportswriter for his hometown newspaper, the Forum of Denver, Iowa. He honed his writing skills at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, where he covered Wartburg football for the school's newspaper and high school and college sports for the Waverly Newspapers. He also was the Voice of the Knights for Wartburg basketball games on KWAR radio. He was elected to the Student Senate and selected for induction into the Society for Collegiate Journalists.
After graduating from Wartburg with a BA in Communication Arts, Dennis worked for radio stations in Waverly and Iowa City, where he was one of the leading contributors to the AP newswire for the state of Iowa. His success in radio led to a position with KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, where he was a news photographer and sports reporter. His creativity in mixing music and video earned accolades from viewers, particularly his tribute to the University of Iowa's Rose Bowl-bound football team set to the Pointer Sisters' hit "I'm So Excited." It also led to an offer to provide the videography for a music video of the Beach Boys' hit, "409."
Around this time, Dennis began authoring freelance travel articles for publications including the Cedar Rapids Gazette, the Alton, Ill. Telegraph, and St. Louis Life. In the mid-'90s, he returned to his first love, newspaper sportswriting. His quality work was recognized by the Iowa Newspaper Association with multiple awards for both sports and news writing, as well as special section design.
With the newspaper industry in a state of crisis, Dennis finally decided to join the 21st Century in 2009, writing an international travel column for examiner.com in Chicago, starting his own wordpress blog, and writing for Suite 101.
